WHAT, WHO, WHY?
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) entered into force on the 4th May 2016 and applies to all EU member states from 00:01 25th May 2018.
As it stands the United Kingdom will still be considered a Member State at the time of inception and will therefore be subject to the requirements of the GDPR. This will be applicable to every global organisation holding private and sensitive data from EU citizens.
The policy has been developed to help strengthen EU citizens’ fundamental rights, to unify data protection for those individuals and to simplify rules for companies within a digitally evolving landscape.
According to the European Commission, this personal data is any information relating to an individual, whether it relates to his or her private, professional or public life. It can be anything from a name, a photo, an email address, bank details, posts on social networking websites, medical information, or a computer’s IP address.

HOW BDI CAN HELP
When it comes to finding where private data is, the task can resemble ‘finding a needle in a haystack’. Data gets spread across multiple platforms and unstructured data formats are increasing, from chat messages to candidate CVs. DataScope relies on machine-learning techniques to detect complex patterns and its context across structured and unstructured data.
DataScope provides a flexible policy engine that allows your privacy team to create and define policies in natural language and then define rules to be enforced on all data usage.
Applications rely on DataScope to store and manage consent. Captured consent is held in an immutable storage layer that provides traceability and auditability. DataScope’s ConsentCheck API can be leveraged by applications to verify if certain data processing activities are permitted, when dealing with individual’s sensitive information and DataScope’s ConsentMarker technology can be used to spread consent records into other reporting layers.
Data Usage Monitoring
George Orwell’s idea of Big Brother is not at all far from the current world we live in. DataScope can act on individuals’ best interests by being a Big Sister that monitors data, accesses, classifies and scores event data for GDPR compliance. Our risk models are tuned to provide Data Protection Officers with KPIs that help understand jurisdiction violations, plan data minimisation initiatives and detect unconsented access.
Insider Threat Detection
Breach detections get special attention under GDPR. Companies have 72 hours to report breaches and depending on the level of sensitivity, notify data subjects of such a breach. DataScope is accompanied with a powerful solution for user behaviour analytics that can detect abnormal access patterns. DataScope eases breach reporting by exposing if sensitive data may have been accessed and highlights the potential individuals that could have been impacted, should a breach have taken place.George Orwell’s idea of Big Brother is not at all far from the current world we live in.
